The aim of the programme is to:
• Develop participants’ knowledge and understanding of self-harm
• Develop participants’ knowledge of the reasons underlying self-harm behaviour
• Consider the needs of people who self-harm

Learning Outcomes:
The learning outcomes include:
• Explain the prevalence of self-harm across different age groups and genders
• Describe the causes, reasons for and functions of self-harm
• Apply the positive approaches to engaging with and caring for someone who self-harms
• List the treatments and helpful responses and services for people who self-harm

For Whom:
The training is suitable for people who work with young people, such as youth workers, teachers, residential care staff, Gardaí, people in caring professions and parents, concerned members of the public, people who work in alcohol and addiction services, those who work with homeless people and people who work with those recovering from mental illness.

Method:
The programme involves an interactive style, including PowerPoint presentations, DVD clips, case study examples and small group discussions.

On completion of the workshop:
Participants will receive:
• Copy of slides presented throughout the workshop
• ‘Understanding Self-harm’: A handbook for healthcare professionals, parents, teachers and youth workers who may have direct contact with people who self-harm
• Certificate of attendance
• List of local resources

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland has credited this one-day Understanding Self-Harm course with 6 CEU points.

Directions to Tayleur House, St Ita’s Campus, Portrane

From the south. (M1 northbound to Dublin Airport/ Belfast)

On the M1, take the EXIT 4 for Skerries/ Donabate, (1st exit is Airport/ Swords, 2nd exit is Swords).
At the round-a-bout at top of slip road take 3rd exit, staying in right lane onto immediate second round-a-bout.
At the round-a-bout take the 2nd exit for Donabate/ Portrane. (3rd exit is M1 south/ Dublin bound)

From the north. (M1 south bound to Dublin/ Dublin Airport)
Take the exit for Swords/ Donabate. (EXIT 4)
Stay in left lane, take 2nd exit for Donabate/ Portrane

For all.

Follow the road into Donabate (no turns), over railway bridge and into the village.
Town centre on your left, church on your right.

Continue on this road (no turns) into Portrane.

Just as you enter Portrane, notice a housing estate on your left and railings/ entrance on your right- this is the entrance to St Ita’s Campus.

Proceed up the avenue with cottages on your left and right.
When you come to a bend/ junction at the top of the avenue Tayleur House is located on the right on the opposite side of the road – follow the signs/ blue path.
