Mill Street Barracks – St Helens’ Haunted History
Built in 1861, Mill Street Barracks was once home to the 47th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers, later the 5th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment. Soldiers trained and mobilised here for WWI and WWII, and the building still stands proudly today — now used by the Sea Cadets.
But behind the military history lies a darker side...
Many believe the barracks once served as a wartime mortuary, with underground tunnels said to link it to a nearby church. Visitors claim to hear footsteps in empty rooms, cold drafts, and even see shadowy figures wandering the old drill hall.
From soldiers to spirits, Mill Street Barracks is one of St Helens’ most historic and haunted buildings. Would you dare to spend a night there?
