Managing Difficult Conversations

Effective communication is critical when concerns are raised by parents, carers and other stakeholders. How those early conversations are handled can make the difference between resolving an issue constructively and it escalating into a formal complaint.

This training is designed for teachers, senior leaders and other education professionals who may need to manage challenging, sensitive or emotionally charged conversations. It focuses on the practical skills and confidence needed to respond professionally, listen effectively, manage expectations and work towards a constructive resolution while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

The course acts as a precursor to formal complaints-handling training, with an emphasis on early intervention and de-escalation. Participants will explore how to recognise when a conversation is becoming difficult, understand what may be driving a parent or stakeholder’s concerns, and use communication techniques that can help prevent issues from escalating unnecessarily.

By the end of the training, participants will be better equipped to:
• approach difficult conversations with confidence and professionalism;
• listen actively and identify the underlying concern;
• communicate clearly when explaining decisions, expectations or limitations;
• respond effectively to frustration, challenge and heightened emotions;
• maintain appropriate professional boundaries;
• recognise when an issue can be resolved informally and when it needs to be escalated; and reduce the likelihood of concerns developing into formal complaints through timely, constructive communication.
