As the Teaching for Mastery approach to mathematics becomes more embedded in primary and secondary schools across the East Midlands East Maths Hub region, colleagues in both special and mainstream schools require a consistent understanding of how to best support pupils with SEND with their mathematical understanding. This Work Group aims to bring colleagues together from across all phases to work collaboratively to develop and share strategies to support this important group of pupils.
Who is this for?
The Work Group is intended for colleagues from both special and mainstream schools and will be cross phase in it's approach.
Identifying the barriers to learning for children with SEND
Better understand the difficulties SEND pupils face within mathematics (including language, engagement, retention of skills).
Have a greater understanding of particular strategies that support SEND students with mathematics
Understand how the use of CPA can help students communicate and consolidate their understanding (including planning and delivery)
Understand how to design lessons to meet the needs of all learners
Work within their school setting to consider how what they learn can develop across the school
Develop behaviour support strategies to support pupil engagement
Understand how language fits into the teaching and learning of mathematics, particularly for pupils with SLC needs (including receptive and expressive language)
