This Work Group aims to develop a greater understanding of the mosaic approach in order to support practitioners in strengthening their understanding of the observation, assessment and planning (OAP) cycle in Reception maths teaching and learning.

Practitioners will be able to explore the OAP cycle in more detail, considering how to use this as a tool to increase their subject knowledge and pedagogy of early maths.

There will be 3 half day sessions which will explore this approach in more detail alongside in-school activities, giving participants the opportunity to implement key strategies into their own provision.

It is also anticipated that each participant will complete an action research project to show the impact of these sessions on their own subject knowledge of this approach as well as evaluating the impact of their teaching for their children's early maths.

There will also be individual coaching sessions to provide additional support for each school's personalised Work Group action plans.

Early Years practitioners in Nursery and Reception classes, Maths Leads, Assessment Leads, SLTs.

It is expected that participants and their schools commit to the full programme; attending all collaborative sessions as well as completing the in-school activities which are designed to ensure maximum impact from attending this Work Group.

Professional learning:

Participants will develop an understanding of the key aspects of effective Early Years maths pedagogy: specifically the assessment for learning cycle.

Participants will understand the principles of the NCETM teaching for mastery approach and how this can be applied appropriately within the context of the mosaic approach to observation, assessment and planning.

Practice development:

Participants will develop a greater understanding of the mathematical skills and knowledge children need in Early Years maths using information gathered and analysed through the mosaic approach.

Participants will be able to Identify and implement effective Early Years pedagogies and gain insight into how to support children in their maths learning; using the aspects included in the mosaic approach as the tool to inform pedagogical practice.

Pupil outcomes:

Pupils will benefit from increased opportunities to explore concepts in more depth, and to develop a greater understanding of the connections in mathematics.

Pupils will be more confident in their mathematics and be able to explain their reasoning using appropriate language.
