π Autumn Science Club: Nature Detectives
Join us for seven weeks of autumn-inspired science!
This practical programme combines nature exploration, experiments, engineering challenges and creative activities to help children discover the science happening all around them during autumn.
Across the programme, children will explore:
π³ Trees and how we identify them
π Autumn leaves and why they change colour
π° Conkers, acorns and different types of seeds
π¬οΈ How seeds are dispersed
π² Pine cones and how they respond to changing conditions
π§οΈ Autumn weather and seasonal change
π¦ Hibernation, migration and how animals prepare for winter
𧣠Insulation and how animals keep warm
π Decomposition and woodland ecosystems
Every session is designed to be active and interactive. Children will investigate, predict, test, observe, build and create rather than simply learning from worksheets.
Activities may include leaf chromatography, tree identification, conker investigations, designing flying seeds, pine-cone experiments, building hibernation dens, testing insulation and creating an autumn woodland ecosystem.
π AQA Unit Award Scheme
Learning completed throughout the programme will also provide opportunities to work towards selected AQA Unit Award Scheme units linked to trees, autumn nature, weather and seasonal change.
The Unit Award Scheme recognises what an individual learner can do and provides formal certification for successfully completed units.
What to bring
Most resources and equipment will be provided.
Children are encouraged to bring along interesting autumn nature finds throughout the programme, such as fallen leaves, pine cones, conkers, acorns, twigs or seed heads.
Please only collect items that have already fallen naturally and avoid picking living plants.
We recommend comfortable clothing suitable for practical activities, crafting and occasional outdoor nature exploration.
This is an online session delivered via Zoom.
Your joining link will be sent before the first session. Please join from a device with a camera and microphone where possible.
π What you'll need:
Each week we'll use simple household, craft and natural materials for our investigations. A weekly resource list will be sent in advance so you have plenty of time to prepare.
Throughout the programme, it would be helpful to collect and keep some autumn nature treasures such as fallen leaves, pine cones, conkers, acorns, sycamore seeds and small twigs.
βοΈ Basic supplies such as paper/card, pencils, colouring pens, scissors, glue and sticky tape will also be useful.
Please don't worry if you can't find a particular natural item, we'll always provide an alternative way to join in.
π©βπ¬ Adult support: Younger children may need occasional adult help with setting up experiments or using scissors/materials, but sessions are designed for children to participate as independently as possible.
Most importantly, come ready to investigate, experiment, create and get curious! ππ¬
