This course is for emerging artists wanting to further their understanding of the contemporary art industries in Aotearoa/New Zealand, and how to more strategically develop their careers within it. At the completion of the course participants will gain a more informed ability to:
articulate their practice in speech and text
professionally present their work to a variety of audiences (online and in-person)
understand where they fit in the industry
navigate their next steps to develop their careers

The course is comprised of presentations that cover general principles, the analysis of industry examples, and space for questions and open discussion.

Materials:
Pen and paper for note-taking
A basic computer to write documents and develop your digital portfolio

Topics:

• Course introduction: the arts industry in Aotearoa/New Zealand, tips and techniques for developing your portfolio, and participant introductions.
• Developing a proposal for exhibitions, awards, scholarships, residencies, funding, sponsorship, etc.
• Visibility: marketing, web presence, social media, media coverage, photographic documentation, etc…
• Writing key documents: artist statement, exhibition statement, media release, bio., and C.V. ​ Note: This is a provisional framework and may be adjusted at the tutor’s discretion throughout the course in response to the evolving needs of students or other factors.
