Paul believes training an effective All-Clear is a valuable part of any detection dog’s skill set. Alongside Go/No-Go decisions and blank searches, it gives dogs clarity when entering a search and removes the pressure of always needing to find something.

Rather than creating frustration when no odour is present, this approach teaches the dog how to confidently communicate that information back to the handler. This can reduce false alerts, lower arousal levels, and help build longer, more consistent searches.

The All-Clear also gives handlers a useful way to assess whether a dog truly recognises and understands its target odour, rather than guessing or filling in the gaps.
