Datos

In 1881, Winslow Homer, an American artist, arrived in Cullercoats intending to stay a couple of weeks. However, he ended up staying almost two years, capturing the vibrant working life of the Northern England fishing village throughout the seasons. Settling in a dilapidated cliffside cottage, he painted Cullercoats fisher girls and men. When Homer opened his curtains each morning, the lively scene of fisher girls mending nets, fishermen at work, and the colourful, bustling beach, dominated by strong women, unfolded before him. The women's voices echoed from the cliffs, showcasing their equal role alongside men in this vibrant community. Susan's then 15 year old grandmother, Maggie Jefferson, became his favourite muse. Susan shares the stories of how Homer came to Cullercoats, stayed and painted.
