SUNDAY SPECIAL: Sound walk & introduction to field recording (Crowden)

Details

Enjoy a slow, curious sonic ramble exploring a quieter corner of the Peak District National Park - listening from multiple non-human perspectives, and finishing in a beautiful restored and remote chapel tucked away on the side of the Woodhead Pass.

Drawing upon a variety of meditation techniques and the learnings behind the late internationally admired sound composer Pauline Oliveros - together we'll explore sonic meditations and learn the techniques of how we can truly listen closer to our everyday surroundings.

Clare, herself an award-winning international sound artist, will be packing her favourite tools to demonstrate and let you play for yourself.

We'll enjoy playing with microphones such as:
-geofons - to listen to the sounds of the earth,
-hydrophones - to listen underwater like a fish,
-aeolian harp with contact microphone - to catch the harmonics of the wind,
-PlantWave - a sonicification device that converts the electrical variations offered by plants and trees into sound.

We'll take time to pause, listen and journal too.
Clare will be offering journaling prompts along the way, as we move through a variety of landscapes - water, woodlands, moorland, roadside - to absorb the subtle and significant changes always happening around us.

Once our walking loop is complete, we'll rest in our final stop - the fabulous spot of St James Chapel. A renovated and remote stone beauty spot with incredible 360 views of the Longdendale valley.

Here at the chapel we'll download our recordings, enjoy a final meditation, and have a well earned cup of tea.

It's one of a handful of venues Clare has followed and explored as part of her walking podcast series, Longdendale Tales and accompanying five week festival. And is now home to her nan's wurlitzer organ - which we'll have a tinkle on!

This event is an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and replenish.

No meditation or field recording knowledge is required. Just an open mind to listen closer, and be kind to others, and the landscape.

Level: Beginner

Instructions

We start and finish at Crowden Car Park, with around a 4km walk and 200m-ish ascent.
We'll be out walking for most of the morning - so waterproof clothing and solid walking shoes are a must.

Whilst we're not going too wild with anything like scrambling or climbing, we will have one big hill to tackle on our route up to Crowden quarry. The terrain is loose rocks on a muddy steep path.
Bring walking poles if you need some extra support, or - if your mobility isn't quite up to this at the moment - come join us at another event instead.

Our pace will be steady, perhaps slower than you're used to, and - at times - we'll need to walk in silence. So this isn't really a social walk or a silent retreat, but there will be times we need to be quiet every so often when recording.

The location we're starting and ending in has no public transport. You'll need to have a car or get a lift for this venue.

There's no phone signal once we're in Crowden car park - so if you're more than 10 minutes late, we're sorry but we'll have to leave you behind!

There are public toilets at the start of the walk, and a 'camping style' toilet once we reach the chapel. In between it's a nature wee only option!

As we're out for a good few hours it's worth bringing some snacks or a sandwich with you. We can have a cup of tea when we get to the chapel if we need to warm up.
