6 WEEK BLOCK
An exciting class for those new to upholstery or continuing with a project. Kenny will guide you through a variety of techniques and introduce you to the equipment needed for a small upholstery project.
The room is equipped with airlines to operate compressed air staple guns. We also encourage the traditional method of manual tacking. There is a limited number of tools available at the Centre for the class to share. You may choose to invest in your own along the way. To get started you will need a measuring tape, tailors chalk, fabric scissors and to bring a piece of furniture to work on. Don’t worry! This needn’t be expensive.
Recommended upholstery projects for beginners: a dining chair or stool, drop in dining seat or small footstool. As you progress through smaller upholstery projects each term, and begin to be able to work independently, your tutor may advise you on follow-on projects with the aim of working up to armchair sizes and structures. Upholstery is all about building up your skills, starting from the basics and developing into more complex techniques.
Due to the varying nature of the upholstery projects in a class and the different techniques involved, the tutor will be circling the room advising and assisting where needed. This does mean that there may be times that you are awaiting assistance. We recommend using this time to take notes on techniques, documenting your progress.
We have some on site storage for upholstery projects. The storage of projects by disabled students, those with limited mobility, and people using public transport to attend the class will be prioritised. If the storage space is at capacity, you may need to transport your project back and forth with you. If you'd like to store your project at the centre, please contact info@forganartscentre.co.uk.
Please note that we do not take sofas, two-seaters, chaise longue or large and complex projects that will take up too much space or tutors time in the class.
