5 WEEK BLOCK

Learn traditional techniques of rag working and create your own piece of textile wall art with Sarah Grigg in this 5 week class.

Returning to a childhood love of art, Sarah is a self taught textile maker and designer and has been selling her work under her business name Ragged House for the last 7 years. Sarah has run workshops locally and is involved in community projects with adults and children, teaching new skills, and providing a creative space. Re-using fabrics and yarns, she creates textile art, soft furnishings and jewellery that combine traditional techniques with a contemporary style.

In this class you will learn how to use traditional rag working tools, the American rug hook, the latch hook and the proddy tool. These would have originally been used in rug making, and each provides a different texture and effect. Then there will be time to consider composition and colour as you plan your wall art, and choose which techniques to use to create your final piece.

Rag working is very repetitive and relaxing, and progress is slow and mindful. Due to its labour intensive nature the piece of art you create in the class will not be large, and this introductory course aims to provide you with the skills you will need to go on to make larger pieces in the future.

All tools and materials will be provided by the tutor, but if you have any fabrics that you particularly want to use then please feel free to bring them.
