About the course

This new painting course is suitable for people of all abilities.

Students are welcome to bring a painting project they are already working on and the tutor will offer support, guidance, and technical instruction. Or, students can be led through a project the tutor has devised allowing students to complete a portrait in oil paints. Each week the tutor will show you how to take your portrait from sketch to completed painting, ensuring you finish the course with a completed piece. The tutor will provide demonstrations and provide advice and support throughout the course. This is an ideal course for painting beginners and improvers who would like to further refine their skills.

Students are encouraged to bring images that they are inspired by, whether it's a painting by another artist or photograph they have taken. We have a small library of art books which you are also free to use as reference.

If you do not have any art materials we have some here at the centre which you're free to use and will help you get started. In time you will be advised on what materials to buy. Students are also welcome to bring along materials they're interested in using. These might include:

Oil paints (titanium white, yellow ochre, lemon yellow, cadmium red, raw umber, french ultramarine, and a palette knife)
Charcoal, conte, or pastels
Pencils, rubber or putty rubber
Acrylic paint
Watercolour set
A selection of brushes
Watercolour paper

Paper for drawing or for acrylic painting
Canvas or primed panels

Please do not bring turpentine or any other fluids with vapours or hazardous chemicals. We will be cleaning brushes with an odourless turps substitute and cleaning method.

This course is led by Robert Macmillan, an exhibiting artist with over 20 years experience.
