Learn to create useful and beautiful willow baskets using traditional weaving techniques.
Tutor Donald Spy will guide the class through the process of willow weaving using a selection of Fife and Somerset willows.
Following on from the previous round basket classes, this six-week course is suitable for beginners or returners and will offer a choice of round or oval baskets.
Whilst sharing many of the same techniques as their round partners, the use of an oval base creates some exciting opportunities for a whole new group of basket types. Serving or display platters, traditional shopping baskets, garden trugs, tool baskets and more contemporary styles.
During this six week course, you will be taught all the basic skills needed to make either an oval or round basket using traditional ’stake and strand’ techniques. Each class will focus on particular techniques with time for practice and questions.
This class is limited to just 8 students and will cover techniques such as:
Bases & design considerations/anatomy of a basket
Oval and round bases and their particular techniques, continental slath or traditional underfoot methods, pairing weave, joining weavers, tension, and shaping.
Upset & waling
Types of waling, 3 & 4 rod, pull down, chasing. Starting the upset, controlling uprights.

All materials and tools will be provided.
Please be aware that working with willow is hard work for the hands and brain, so expect to be a little tired by the end of your busy but enjoyable day!
The session includes a short break for refreshments. Tea and coffee is available at the centre.
Your willow basket weaving Tutor lives with someone who is still needing to shield and is in a very vulnerable position. With this in mind, we ask that if anyone is feeling unwell that they do not attend the workshop, to take a lateral flow test where possible or wear a mask. While this is no longer our general policy for attending a class, in this circumstance we feel it necessary and we are sure that you can understand.
The room is large and there are only 8 participants. It will be well ventilated and we all have the luxury of a large table each to ourselves, so we are well spaced apart. Tea and coffee is available throughout the day.
We will be making a useful and versatile round willow basket using a number of traditional techniques. All materials and tools will be provided.
