Details

Your tutor for this class is ceramicist Heather Gilbert. Heather studied Fine Art before pursuing her practice in ceramics, working to set up Collective studios for Artists , exhibiting her work, touring and teaching. Enthusiastic about alternative glazing and firing methods, Heather also holds raku workshops at the Centre which students can work towards.

The Ceramic Sculpture class is predominantly, but not exclusively, aimed at making decorative ceramics. Heather will cover all methods of making, from hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching and slab building, to throwing and altering work on the wheel. You will also learn about the different glazing methods and techniques you can use to finish your creations.
If you want to explore a more sculptural and painterly approach to both figurative and abstract ceramics then this class will encourage you to make unique pieces tailored to each individual.

About our Pottery

We cover a range of hand-building, wheel throwing, and glazing techniques and work is fired regularly at the Centre. Our classes are educational as well as social and open to beginners and experienced potters. You can join our pottery classes at any stage of a block, where there are still places available.

We have 6 throwing wheels of varying sizes, including one for people with low mobility that does not require the use of a foot peddle, all spaced out in our bright 'pottery kitchen'. We have a glazing area, drying room, kiln house and a pottery classroom where you can sit (or stand!) to work.

Our Pottery tutors come with a wealth of teaching experience and ceramics knowledge.
Attending our pottery classes opens further opportunities to take part in specific Pottery workshops or studio days which may only be open to current attendees or returning students, such as Raku, or ceramic technique workshops and our Saturday studio days.

Please note, firing charges are now included in the cost of the class
Clay is available to buy at the Centre, or you can use our recycled clay to practice with.
