Join us for a Batty Afternoon on Saturday, 16th November! From 2–4 pm, we'll be installing 10 new bat boxes on Ray Mill Island with the help of the Berks & South Bucks Bat Group and Friends of Ray Mill Island. Whether you’re a bat enthusiast or just curious, all are welcome to join this fun, free event!

📚 Bat Facts with Claire and the Team: Start the afternoon learning fascinating facts about our local bats from expert Claire and her team.

🌳 Island Tour & Box Placement: We’ll take a tour around the island to choose the perfect spots for each bat box, giving our bats cozy new homes!

🎨 Decorate and Number the Boxes: Add your creative touch by decorating and numbering the boxes to make them unique to Ray Mill Island.

🦇 Monitoring Tips: The Berks Bats team will also show us how to monitor bat activity safely and effectively—no climbing required unless you’re licensed or insured!

💸 Free Event: This event is completely free, but if you’d like to support future projects, donations to Friends of Ray Mill Island or memberships with Berks Bats or Wild Maidenhead are always appreciated.

Instructions

What to Wear

Wear gloves when handling any natural materials such as branches or stems.
Cover any open cuts with a waterproof dressing before starting and wash hands thoroughly afterward, especially before eating.
Dress appropriately for the weather and ensure proper footwear.
Avoid touching your mouth or eyes, as some fungi can be poisonous, and natural materials may carry contaminants. Monitor for symptoms of illness and seek medical help if needed.
Long sleeves and trousers are advised due to mosquitoes; insect repellent may also be used.
Gloves are recommended to minimize contact with dog faeces.

Hazards on Site

Watch for trip hazards such as tree roots, and be cautious of trees with broken limbs or signs of decay, especially in dry or waterlogged conditions. Carry a mobile phone.
Avoid areas with bee or wasp nests, and inform the leader if you have allergies or carry an epi-pen, stating its location.
Avoid adders or other snakes if encountered.
Do not eat unidentified berries or other organic material; ingestion could cause anything from mild upset to severe health issues. Only consume known safe berries, such as blackberries.
Do not consume mushrooms or toadstools, as some are poisonous, and preserving these helps maintain ecological diversity.
We are not insured for illnesses due to mould exposure, so avoid unnecessary risk.
Biological hazards such as Lyme disease, Leptospirosis, Weil’s disease, and bacterial infections may occur. Wash hands thoroughly before eating to reduce contamination risk.
Pregnant and nursing individuals should be aware of heightened risks associated with certain environmental bacteria. Seek medical attention promptly if illness occurs following outdoor activities.

Water Safety

Avoid getting water from rivers, canals, ponds, or streams in your mouth or on cuts. Rinse and clean thoroughly if accidental contact occurs.
If flu-like symptoms develop after contact with natural water, seek medical advice promptly.

Supervision

Children and pets must be closely supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Dogs should remain on a lead and under control.
