Staithes Special Fossil Safari with the Rock Showman

A more challenging itinerary aimed at the progressing intermediate enthusiast or those who want a longer tour in a more demanding location. A great location for rarer ammonites, jet, pyrite fossils and marine reptile bones.

SUITABILITY RATING - NOT suitable for children under 8 years old, adults with lowered mobility, or for those nervous around clifftops. Anyone with mobility issues should contact us first.

START LOCATION - By railings just past The Cod and Lobster Pub, above harbour beach, Staithes

PARKING - Is available at the Bank Top car park, 10 minutes walk away via the steep Staithes Bank. Carpark is always busy in peak season and at weekends and there is NO PARKING at beach level. Allow extra time at end of tour when paying for parking - it’s a long way back up when ice cream beckons! Recommended minimum 4 hours

Terrain: Ranges from sandy beach to slippery rock platform, shale scree, steep steps, and loose cobbles. There are challenging elements to this itinerary - it is not suited to those with mobility issues. Over 1 mile walked on coastal rock platform. Please check with us before booking if you have any doubts of suitability.

The 3-4 hour tour starting from the Cod & Lobster and heads ESE towards Runswick Bay. It combines rock platform and beach deposits at the water's edge. You must be prepared for offroad walking in potentially wet, slippery conditions, good walking boots and waterproofs are a must. Bring water, snacks or a meal as there are no facilities once the tour has begun. Once at beach level your guide Steve will help you find some interesting fossils and explain how to hunt for the local specialities, golden pyrite fossils and Whitby Jet.

The tour starts at the advertised start time so please arrive with time to use the local facilities.
