Are you keen to learn sketchbook techniques to make your holiday experiences more
memorable, instead of just taking photographs? Are you often out and about in towns and
cities with a sketchbook, but could do with more focus and inspiration to help develop your
style? Have you learned some techniques online at home by yourself, sketching the things
you’ve seen around you, but now desperate for ways to be creative when out and about,
and to share these with like minded people?
If so, then join this in-depth, energetic and fun class. You’ll start with a grounding in this
sketching approach using rapid drawing, continuous line, and learning how to establish
focal points with tone, using pen & ink, and line & wash techniques. As the day
progresses, you’ll be using sight measuring, angle finding, and increasing your awareness
through identifying shadow shapes, strong focus, composition and perspective, also
looking at lettering styles and effective colour mixing for powerful results. You’ll then work
from projected photo references to develop and progress, which helps set the scene as if
sketching out on location. Starting with simple objects, you’ll then move on to more
challenging subjects such as buildings and streetscapes, and incorporating figures into
your urban sketches. If possible, please bring some of your sketchbook work to share with
the group - not for a critique of any kind - mainly to show the tutor your interests and
creative direction so far. This could be anything you’ve seen in your daily life, or even from
your travels to far flung places.
Suitable for those at all levels with at least some prior drawing and painting experience.
There’ll be lots of support and encouragement throughout.
Students will need to bring their own equipment, although some things will be on hand if
needed. A kit list suggesting suitable materials will be supplied before the class
