Reactive / nervous dog scent workshop

Would you love to try scent work with your dog, but worry that a normal group class might be too much for them?

This 2-hour workshop is specifically for nervous, anxious and reactive dogs, with owners who understand that sometimes our dogs just need a little more space.

You'll learn what scent work is, why it can be such a fantastic activity for dogs who find the world a bit overwhelming, and — most importantly — you'll get to have a go with your own dog.

We'll introduce scent work gradually, giving each dog the space and time they need. There's no pressure to keep up, no expectation that your dog needs to be comfortable around other dogs, and no judgement if they bark, worry or need a break.

It's also a chance to spend time with other owners who get it. People who understand why you might need to wait before coming through a doorway, move further away, use visual barriers or give your dog some extra breathing room.

During the workshop you'll:

• Learn how dogs use their incredible sense of smell
• Discover why scent work can be particularly useful for nervous and reactive dogs
• Learn some simple scent work activities
• Have a go with your own dog
• Learn activities you can continue at home
• Meet other owners who understand life with a dog who needs a little more space

Dogs will work individually, so ideally your dog should be able to settle in your own car between their turns. This gives every dog the opportunity to work without the pressure of other dogs nearby. If settling in the car isn't suitable for your dog, please get in touch before booking — it doesn't necessarily mean they can't attend, and we can chat about what they need.

You don't need any previous scent work experience and your dog doesn't need to be well behaved or comfortable around other dogs.

And if you both catch the scent work bug, this doesn't have to be a one-off! There will be the option to continue into weekly scent work classes, develop your skills together and, if you fancy it, even work towards competitions.

Yes, nervous and reactive dogs can compete in scent work! Many do extremely well because scent work isn't about being sociable with other dogs or working alongside them. Dogs search individually, making it a sport that can be accessible to dogs who wouldn't be comfortable in many other competitive environments.
