In Brazil, a "roda de samba" (literally meaning "samba circle") is a celebratory event where people get together to sing, play, dance and share the joy of samba. This music has its roots in more intimate settings than carnival or 'street' samba - in peoples homes, bars, parties, etc - It's infectious, engaging music which creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a real sense of togetherness.
In this workshop, we'll be learning a few songs that are popular in the style and how to play some of the percussion instruments that are used to support the singing (pandeiro, tan-tan, rebolo, repique de mao etc.) These are more subtle percussion instruments than those used in larger scale carnival samba. If you've been to our previous "Rio samba" workshops, this is a chance to experience a different side to samba and Brazilian culture.
All levels of musical experience are welcome -
This music truly has something for everyone; from easy to grasp (but very useful) percussion grooves to more complex phrases, calls & variations. Start simple and grow from there - there's always something new to learn in samba!
Learn new musical skills in a friendly atmosphere and join an ever-growing community of Brazilian music lovers here in Glasgow.
Drumming and singing can be thirsty work so you might want to bring something to drink. Please try not to arrive any earlier than 6.45 as there might not be anyone at the venue to let you in.
