The Level 3 Handcuffing, Soft Cuff and Leg Restraint Course is fully Accredited by TiSB Awarding body to ensure quality assurance.

This intensive, practical training program is designed for professionals who may be required to lawfully restrain individuals as part of their operational duties. The course develops the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to apply restraint techniques safely, proportionately and in accordance with current legislation, organisational policy and recognised good practice.

Learners will gain a thorough understanding of the legal framework surrounding the use of force, including human rights considerations, necessity, proportionality and accountability. Emphasis is placed on communication, conflict management and de-escalation, ensuring physical restraint is always considered a last resort.

This course will lead onto our L4 Handcuff Instructor Course which is also fully accredited by the TiSB awarding body.

Thank you for booking onto our Level 3 Handcuffing Course. We look forward to welcoming you.

This course combines classroom learning with practical exercises designed to develop your knowledge, skills and confidence in the lawful, safe and effective use of restraint equipment.

Course Details

Duration: 2 Days

Registration: 08:45

Course Time: 09:00 – 17:00

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time to complete registration.

What You Will Learn

  • Legal powers and responsibilities
  • Human Rights and duty of care
  • National Decision Model and dynamic risk assessment
  • Medical implications of restraint
  • Safe use of rigid handcuffs
  • Safe use of soft cuffs
  • Safe use of leg restraints
  • Communication and de-escalation
  • Searching and monitoring restrained subjects
  • Practical application and removal techniques
  • Incident recording and post-incident procedures

What to Bring

Please bring:

  • Photographic identification
  • Notepad and pen
  • Any prescription medication you may require
  • Reading glasses if required

Clothing Requirements

As this course involves practical physical activity, learners should wear:

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for physical training
  • Flat trainers or suitable footwear
  • Long trousers (shorts are not recommended)
  • No jewellery where possible
  • Long hair should be tied back

Avoid restrictive clothing that may limit movement.

Fitness to Participate

This course includes practical restraint techniques involving standing, kneeling, controlled movement and physical contact with other learners.

You must ensure you are medically fit to participate.

Please advise the instructor before the course starts if you have:

  • Back, neck or joint injuries
  • Heart or respiratory conditions
  • Recent surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Any condition that may affect safe participation
  • Any injury sustained shortly before the course

Reasonable adjustments will be made wherever practicable.

Safety During Practical Training

For everyone’s safety:

  • Follow instructor directions at all times.
  • Do not attempt techniques that have not been taught.
  • Immediately report any injury or illness.
  • Inform the instructor if you become unwell.
  • Respect your training partner at all times.
  • Practical exercises are controlled learning activities and must never be treated as competitions.

Behaviour Expectations

  • Treat others with dignity and respect.
  • Follow all health and safety instructions.
  • Use appropriate language.
  • Participate fully in both theory and practical sessions.
  • Respect confidentiality where scenarios are discussed.
  • Refrain from disruptive behaviour.

Anyone whose behaviour places themselves or others at risk may be removed from the course.

Mobile Phones

Please switch mobile phones to silent during training.

Calls should only be taken during scheduled breaks unless there is an emergency.

Refreshments

Tea and coffee may be available.

Please bring your own lunch or purchase food locally during the lunch break.

Advise us in advance of any dietary requirements if refreshments are being provided.

Assessment

To achieve the qualification, learners must successfully complete:

  • Practical skills assessment
  • Knowledge assessment
  • Continuous observation by the instructor

Learners must demonstrate safe, lawful and competent application and removal of restraint equipment.

Certification

Successful learners will receive the appropriate Level 3 certificate following completion of all assessments and verification procedures.

Important Information

This course teaches the lawful and safe use of restraint equipment.

Certification does not provide legal authority to carry or use handcuffs or restraints. Learners are responsible for ensuring their use complies with current legislation, employer policy and operational procedures.
