Details

This is Freediving 101 - a 4 week ONLINE course (one hour a week) run LIVE on Zoom by fully qualified AIDA Freediving coach and big wave surfer Tom Luddington. Tom has a breath hold of 6 minutes and 24 seconds ranking him in the top 10 in the UK and has dived down to 60 metres depth on a single breath. The course is suitable for complete beginners and experienced water people alike and focuses on the essentials of ‘how to safely go freediving’.

Tom shares expert techniques honed by freedivers that are also perfect for adventurous swimmers, snorkelers, surfers, sailors, paddle boarders, kayakers - and really anyone who loves to be in the water and dive down.

Tom says “As well as developing a good breath hold (that is the easy bit!) it is essential to know about the correct equipment, techniques, skills and the risks - plus how to train effectively so we can stay safe while freediving. And if you plan to do a practical freediving course soon - which I highly recommend you do - then this online course will give you a great head start.”

Knowledge is Power - 12 ways to safely freedive for longer - it's essential before we freedive to understand what happens to our bodies during a breath hold. A little biology theory goes a long way. We learn how to avoid the classic (and dangerous) mistakes to ensure our snorkelling and freediving sessions are done effectively and safely. You will discover the natural signals our bodies give us, and learn which ones we can push through, and which ones we must listen to. Put simply, we put ‘sensations’ above ‘expectations’. Knowing ourselves and the natural signals our bodies give us will ultimately give us the power to stay relaxed in our breath hold for far longer. In this intro session we also take a look at freediving equipment, correct weighting, safety kit and buddying.

The Diaphragm Mastered - together we will learn how to control the diaphragm - the most important muscle for breath holds. We will explore the correct techniques to take the most effective ‘one full breath’ & learn how to perform recovery breaths. We learn when we can keep holding our breath (green light) and when we must stop holding our breath (red light). Truly relaxing is an art that goes well beyond just lying down with eyes closed and belly breathing for 2 minutes. Tom chased after a solution to his chronic back pain for 15 years before finally finding the complete answer. Active Somatic Relaxation. This is what Tom feels is the secret that he can now share with you on how to truly reach new levels of lowering your heart rate, eliminating tension and increasing your ability to more easily achieve a longer breath hold. It can also help you to overcome tension related pain.

Frenzel Fitness - The equalisation workshop. Even shallow dives down to a few metres require us to equalise the air in our ears to avoid pain and injury.. During this workshop Tom will explain the different methods for equalising our ears and give you the right start to becoming an expert at Frenzel Equalisation.

Pro Freediving Skills - video analysis. During this session you will see videos and stills analysed by Tom real time to teach you the correct technique for a duckdive, how to train static apnea with a buddy in the pool / sheltered water, and we see a beginner performing a basic rescue and discuss essential basic rescue techniques.

Marine Life Inspiration - In the final session we will be treated to a marine life slideshow by Marine Biologist Dr Lou Luddington to inspire us to get out freediving and give us some information on what to look out for. After that we run a fun quiz at the end to test your knowledge and make sure you have learned all the key points from the course.

More info:
The seminars are run for one hour (8pm UK time each week) over four weeks every Tuesday starting on 14th Feb, and attendance is highly recommended. Additionally each session will be recorded but only available to view for ONE WEEK after, so if you miss a session you can catch up in your own time.

FAQ
What if I can’t make the live session? If you sign up to the course, but you have to miss the live session for any reason then don’t worry - everyone that signs up will be sent the zoom recordings (available for one week) and you can watch along and do the exercises / homework in your own time at a later date.

Is it just theory? - No - elements of this course are practical workshops where you may be asked to lie down flat on your back on a comfy surface that you can’t fall off (such as a rug on the floor) to hold your breath, or practice equalisation techniques.

Do I need to have someone with me? No - not for this course. If you are doing the online FREE Max breath hold workshop I recommend you have someone with you to keep time for you when attempting a dry max breath hold,, but it is optional. You will need a buddy for some of the homework tasks, but they are also optional to complete.

I have epilepsy / a heart condition / any health issue that might make this unsafe for me - can I still do it? If you have an existing medical condition, we strongly recommend you speak to your doctor / seek professional medical advice on whether you should undertake the practical elements of this workshop or do the homework tasks.
