What is Pet Gundog?
One of the most common ‘types’ of breed in our pet homes is a ‘gundog’ breed, namely Retrievers, Spaniels and Pointers.
Whilst being great family pets, they can sometimes struggle with the stresses and requirements of our modern lifestyles. We live in a fast paced 24/7 world of family & friends, technology, noise, shift
work and social lives. This is a far cry from the original purpose of our gundog breeds, and many owners aren’t aware of these purposes.
Genetics are strong and are still passed on to any puppies who are coming to live in our modern homes instead of working in the field. This can lead to problems such as destructiveness, obsessiveness, excess barking, hunting, chasing, stealing, guarding, hyper socialisation and overstimulation.
In this pet gundog workshop we will look at the genetic makeup of our pets, and how we can use their natural needs and traits to our advantage in our modern lives. How we can fulfil those needs to prevent problems in other areas, and fit training in with our daily schedule.
Suitable for retrievers, spaniels and their crosses, including ‘poos and ‘doodles, as well as Pointers and Vizslas who want to look at the foundation skills:
Genetic Needs
Focus & Distractions
Inside & Outside Brain
Heelwork & The Need For It
Hunting & Chasing, Why Do It?
Retrieving & The Chain Of Events
Troubleshooting & Q&A
Suitable for beginners as well as more advanced dogs - each exercise will be adjusted to every dog's individual needs and skills.

Lisa has owned both retriever and spaniel breeds for 14 years, and has been actively working them on several shoots for the past 7 years, training them to this standard using positive methods.
She also competes all over the country in Heelwork to Music and Freestyle, Qualifying for the Crufts 2024 Semi Finals with her Flatcoated Retriever, successfully training one of her Cocker Spaniels in scent detection for the first time during 2020, and filming with the other Cocker Spaniel for an ITV Drama.
All of Lisa’s dogs are pets, who live the modern pet gundog lifestyle in the house, go on walks, holidays, socialise and play. It is possible to have it all, so let’s start at the beginning and enjoy the journey!
