Humber and North Yorkshire (HNY) Health and Care Partnership is proud to support and promote UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) 2022.

UKDHM is taking place from Wednesday 16 November to Friday 16 December 2022. ‘Getting Started with Makaton and More’ is one of a series of exciting sessions to mark this important event.

About UK Disability History Month
UKDHM is an annual event which grew from the UK disability rights movement and it provides a platform to focus on the history of the struggle disabled people continue to face for equality and human rights.

It also provides an opportunity for the valuable contributions of disabled people to be acknowledged and celebrated, for us to focus on reducing the inequalities disabled people experience and to raise awareness of the ‘everyday ableism’ disabled people face.

Join us to learn Makaton and more about accessible communications that are inclusive for everyone
We’re delighted to offer this two-hour introduction to accessible communications that are inclusive for everyone from two of our very own regional Makaton interpreters – Anna Davies and Megan Foot.

During this session we will discuss the importance of communication when planning and delivering care. We will also explore ways we can do this with people who do not use verbal language to communicate.

Everyone can communicate in some way – it is our job as professionals to find out how each of our patients or service users tell us what they need and what their preferences are.

You will learn some Makaton signs and symbols and we will explore some case studies to demonstrate how Makaton and communication aids are used in the health and social care setting.

Creative and innovative strategies to comply with the Accessible Information Standards will also be shared.

About Anna and Megan
Anna and Megan have worked with children, young people and adults who are differently-abled for many years in the health and education sector.

Anna is a registered children’s nurse, currently working as professional lead in nursing and conditions at City Healthcare Partnership (CHCP) in Hull.

Megan is the accessible standards information lead also at CHCP.

Together, they are really passionate about communication and see it as a real privilege to be able to share their love of Makaton and how it improves outcomes for people, giving them a voice and enabling them to be heard.
