Ready to take your throwing to the next level?
Our six-week Improvers’ Throwing Course is designed for people who have completed a beginners’ throwing course or already have some experience at the wheel.
Working in a small group of just three students, you’ll build greater control and consistency, refine your technique and begin tackling more ambitious forms. You’ll receive plenty of individual guidance while developing your own ideas and approach to making.
During the course, we’ll explore:
• Improving centring and clay control
• Throwing larger and taller forms
• Refining cylinders, bowls and shaped vessels
• Making matching sets and series
• Creating lids and handles
• Improving trimming and finishing
• Developing precision and craftsmanship
• Exploring slips, texture and surface decoration
• Refining glaze application
• Planning and completing more ambitious pieces
Every session includes demonstrations, plenty of hands-on making time and individual support from your tutor.
Rather than everyone producing identical pieces, you’ll be encouraged to develop your own forms, explore your interests and create a more cohesive collection of work.
Your course includes:
• Six weekly sessions of 2.5 hours
• Small-group teaching with a maximum of three people
• All clay, tools and equipment
• Glazes and firing
• Tea, coffee and biscuits
• Your finished pieces to collect once fired
Level: Intermediate
This course is suitable for people who have completed our Beginners’ Throwing Course or have equivalent wheel-throwing experience. You should have some experience centring clay and pulling a basic cylinder.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting muddy or dusty. Closed-toe shoes are recommended, long hair must be tied back, and fingernails are best kept fairly short when working on the wheel.
Your pottery will need time to dry and be fired after the course. We’ll contact you when your finished work is ready to collect.
Pottery is wonderfully unpredictable. Although we take every care during drying and firing, pieces can occasionally crack, distort or break as part of the ceramic process.
