JAM Lino-cut Printmaking Workshops with Jillian Bain Christie

Join this free 4-workshops project with award-winning visual artist Jillian Bain Christie and enjoy an introduction to lino-cut and the relief printing process.

Relief printing involves carving a block using various tools to create a design where the printable image is on the surface of the block. Areas left raised will print, and areas removed will not.
The relief image is covered with an oil-based ink using a roller, and paper is placed on the face of the surface, before having pressure applied either with a press, or by hand. The result can be quite graphic, detailed, or sculptural depending on the design.

Bring your own image(s) to work from and be amazed at the result!
The workshops are free and all tools and materials will be provided. All levels of ability welcome, whether you are an absolute beginner or experienced artist. Open to anyone aged 18+

Lino-cut Printmaking will run on Mondays 10am – midday on 11th and 18th May then 1st and 15th June at Hub on the Beach, 103 Coast Drive, Greatstone, Kent TN28 8NR

There are 10 spaces available.

Session 1: 11/05/2026
A short introduction to and demonstration of the relief printing process. Participants will be shown a variety of examples, how to transfer their designs onto the block, and the use of different tools to explore mark-making. The participants will then create and print their own linocuts.

Session 2: 18/05/2026
A short introduction to and demonstration of some further ways of exploring linocut, incorporating ways of using colour, texture, and/or multiple plates to add more variety to finished images.

Session 3: 01/06/2026
Building on the previous two sessions, and now with some practical experience, participants will spend this session creating a final image which may incorporate the use of more than one colour and/or plates

Session 4: 15/06/2026
The final session will concentrate on finishing off and printing their final images.
