WEEKEND: Fungi with Zoë Nash
Aimed at those who share my passion for the quirky, intriguing and endlessly fascinating world of fungi, mushrooms and toadstools, this mixed media weekend workshop will explore a range of methods that visually illustrate, represent, and celebrate these wonderful works of nature.
Taking inspiration from my previous Flora classes, this short course will not only help to develop your observation skills, but will also introduce new ways to represent nature that are more open-ended, expressive, intuitive, and experimental.
Group activities on day one will begin with simple drawing and dry media techniques, before gently moving into wet media and the use of ink, washes and painted colour. Supplied with lots of tips, techniques and inspiration, students will work towards the completion of a more self-directed, fungus-inspired project on day two.
Fungi is suitable for any level of experience. It is not a botanical illustration class and technical accuracy is optional.
“Nature alone is antique, and the oldest art a mushroom.”
— Thomas Carlyle, (1795–1881) a highly influential Scottish essayist, historian, and philosopher.
Materials list
Weekend: Close Encounters with Zoë Nash
Specialist art shops are the best option and will provide student discounts if you mention that you are
attending the school. The stores we recommend are:
• Studio Art Supplies Crummer Road, Grey Lynn
• The French Art Shop Taylors Road, Morningside (Beside Briscoes)
• Gordon Harris Gillies Avenue, Newmarket and Symonds Street, Auckland Central
• Takapuna Art Supplies Helensville or online
This class is a ‘dip in / dip out’ format in terms of materials. Once you start making you’ll get an idea of what you may need, and may wish to bring additional materials along for our second day.
As a general guideline, we recommend that you bring along the following:
• a selection of dry drawing media (e.g. pencils in a few differing weights, biro/s, ink writing pen/s, willow charcoal, graphites, etc.)
• an adhesive eg PVA glue, Modge Podge, or Golden heavy gel matte acrylic medium (most recommended)
• 1-2 thick, flat brushes, and 2-3 smaller, tipped brushes, plus an older small brush that can be dedicated to glueing
• a selection of acrylic paints (primary colours of red, yellow, blue, plus a black and a white as minimum)
• low tack masking tape (lilac)
• scissors, craft knife, or a scalpel (recommend scalpel for more detailed, intricate cutting)
• some good quality drawing and mixed media paper.
As well as some general drawing paper, we suggest an A4 or A5 wet strength/watercolour pad of 250-350gsm, plus a pad of additional larger scale wet strength, mixed media or watercolour paper (such as the A3 Fabriano mixed media pads of 300gsm) which can be cut down to smaller sizes as suits. Please note that good quality paper can also be purchased on site.
Optional:
• watercolour paints or pencils
• your own small cutting mat
• a SMALL selection of “found” papers and/or lightweight fabrics that the class can “pool” and use for collage e.g. wallpapers, road maps, dress patterns, pre-loved clothes (just one or two small items or pre cut rectangles), old books. BSA can provide some but a few extras are always welcome…
BYO lunch or take a walk to local cafes…
Day Two consists of more self-directed work. It is difficult to know exactly what you might need in advance as decisions around this will be made on the Saturday. The above media may be all that you require, however you may wish to source other surfaces to work upon, which may need priming with gesso in advance.
This list is a general guide only.
At Browne School of Art, we also have a selection of basic materials available for purchase:
Paper in A1 - A2 sheets, newsprint, cartridge, sugar grey, wet strength, bulldog clips, pencils
charcoal, erasers, white chalk, black ink.
