Participants on this 1-day course will learn how to make a traditional woven hazel hurdle or framed panel from hazel sticks cut from coppice sites in Central Scotland.
You'll learn all parts of the process, including: selecting and preparing hazel rods for the different parts of a hurdle; splitting the rods; setting the uprights, or zales; weaving; and finishing. Participants will take their own hurdles home, each hurdle or panel measuring approx. 6ft by 3ft.
This is a physically demanding workshop.
You'll arrive on site by 10am, and be directed to workshop. From there, one of our experienced trainers will lead you through the workshop. All wood and tools are provided. The day finishes by 4pm. Please bring food for the day - you are welcome to cook over our campfire. We provide hot drinks and cake/ biscuits.
