Most people know that Monarch butterflies rely on milkweed—but far fewer realize that every butterfly and moth species depends on specific plants to complete its life cycle. Without the right host plants, caterpillars cannot survive, no matter how many flowers are available for nectar.
In this engaging two-hour presentation, Alyssa will explore the vital role native host plants play in supporting butterflies and moths throughout their lives. Participants will learn about keystone plants that support dozens of caterpillar species, as well as highly specialized relationships between certain insects and just one or two plant species. Integrated topics will include butterfly life cycles and development, the ecological importance of native plants, floral resources that support pollinators, and practical ways to create landscapes that function as true habitat.
The class will include a 1.5-hour presentation followed by time for questions and discussion. Participants will leave feeling inspired—and equipped—to diversify their landscapes and create meaningful refuge for butterflies, moths, and other essential insects.
The workshop will be held in our Learning Center, located inside Kigercat Hall (our main building across from the large red barn). After you enter the building, the Learning Center is the first door on the left.
