Wood carving is one of the oldest human art forms, dating to prehistoric times and has been practised for many thousands of years. This course will introduce you to some of the principles of wood carving, the tools required and the understanding needed of wood 'grain'.
Whether you're up for taking a wooden sign to the next level (such as your house number plaque), creating a signature for your makes, or just indulging in some good old fashioned craftsmanship, this course will equip you with the know-how to create classically carved letters in wood. Using traditional techniques, and armed with only a mallet and chisels you will learn how to approach cutting simple letters and create the incredible play of light and shadow that makes hand carved letters so beautiful.
The course will begin with an intro to the tools and 'chip carving' exercises, before moving on to carving an array of upper case letters, with the aim to create a little plaque each with a carved monogram or initials on it.
This course is taught by Cass (she/her) from Cassidie Alder Woodcarving, a talented professional heritage wood carver from Worthing. See her website here: https://www.traditional-woodcarving.co.uk
Expectation setting:
Carving is a physical skill, that will take you some time to warm up on the tools and reading the wood grain, and overall it will take longer than you expect. The course is designed for you to come away with at least some initials carved on your plaque - you may manage more, such as a word or monogram, but please understand this will be dependant on each individual, their energy, physical capacity, mood on the day, etc. Manual skills require a degree of humility, even to the well trained and masters of their craft!
