More Flora with Zoë Nash
Following on from several iterations of Flora I and II, Zoë Nash presents More Flora – an opportunity to creatively explore a range of diverse mark-making, drawing, and painting techniques that take inspiration from nature.
Beginning with some loose observational studies using real-life specimens, the class will be gently encouraged to investigate multiple ways to illustrate how flora can be engaging and personally meaningful in their practice. Starting with group activities, we’ll gradually work towards slower and more self-directed projects that provide plenty of opportunity to develop beyond the classroom.
Whereas Flora I focused on direct observation of selected plant specimens, and Flora II examined how to capture the mood, feeling and emotion that nature can impart, More Flora takes an intuitive, mixed media, and multi layered approach to creating imagery that rather alludes to plant and flower motifs.
More Flora is suitable for any level of experience but would be challenging for an absolute beginner. You do not need to have completed the other two classes beforehand. Feel free to bring along your own plant and flower specimens if desired, and please check the Materials List for everything you need in advance.

A basic kit of materials to get you up and going is listed here. Specialist art shops are the best
option and will provide student discounts if you mention that you are attending the school.

Please Bring:
A RANGE of drawing media (eg pencils in a few different weights, a biro or ink writing pen/s, charcoal and/or graphite... variety is what we are aiming for).
A selection of acrylic paints (suggest plant-like colours such as light green, leaf green, lemon yellow, black, white, blue, and a vibrant colour or two such as magenta, violet, orange, or red)
A few paintbrushes including a medium and a small, round, pointed brush and a 3-5cm wide flat brush
A drinking straw
A3 or A2 sketchpad or good quality drawing paper
Some good quality wet strength/watercolour paper (suggest an A3 mixed media pad that can be cut into smaller sizes if nec. 300gsm)
Low tack lilac-coloured masking tape
BYO lunch or take a walk to local cafes...
Optional:
watercolour paints
indian and/or coloured ink/s
a white pencil or white charcoal
needles and threads
an old toothbrush
own water jar and palette
gesso and acrylic mediums if required
• fixative
visual diary/notebook
Day Two consists of more self-directed work. It is difficult to know exactly what you might need in advance as decisions around this will be made on the Saturday. The above media may be all that you require, however you may wish to source other surfaces to work upon, which may need priming with gesso in advance.

• Indian ink and the use of dip pens
• Bamboo skewers and non-traditional drawing tools
• Handy towels
