Turn everyday food packaging into works of art in this eco-friendly intaglio printmaking class. Intaglio (pronounced in-TAHL-yo) is a printmaking process where you carve or etch a design into a surface, fill those recessed lines with ink, and then transfer the image onto paper using a press. We’ll use recycled TetraPak cartons (shelf-stable cartons used for boxed soup broth) as our primary plates, etching, scoring, and peeling back the thin foil liner to create our designs. We’ll also experiment with a mini-print project using recycled tuna packets. By scoring, stitching, and crinkling the flexible packaging, we'll create fun textures that print beautifully.
This eco-friendly technique creates rich textures, high contrast, and beautiful prints without using traditional chemicals or hazardous materials. This is a resourceful and enjoyable art form that allows for individual creative expression. Participants will create one 5”×7” print on 6”×8” BFK Rives printmaking paper and one 3”×4” print on 4”×5” BFK Rives paper. Bring a favorite sketch or idea, and leave with a finished print and the skills to keep exploring this technique.

If you move through the world with financial ease and the means to fulfill many of your wants as well as your needs – you are able to eat out when you want, abundantly meet your needs through employment or can comfortably not work, have access to family wealth, own property, etc. – consider paying at this level, which will help us ensure the long term sustainability of our programs while keeping our offerings accessible to those with access to fewer resources.
Sustainer Level Ticket: $55
If you are able to meet your needs with relative ease while budgeting your educational and entertainment spending – for instance, you are able to take classes and eat out occasionally as long as you are mindful – consider paying at this level, which will help sustain the work of the Folk School at a modest level.
Supported Level Ticket: $40
If you struggle to fund your basic needs and have limited access to resources in your family and community, or if you would not be able to access this offering without a discounted payment option, consider paying at this level.
