FOLIO Sutton Coldfield is celebrating the writing talent in and inspired by our local community with our brand new FOLIO Sutton Coldfield Flash Fiction Competition.

Write a short story, maximum 250 words, somehow linked to Sutton Coldfield (perhaps through setting or characters), enter it for a small fee (all funds raised will go towards enabling future FOLIO Sutton Coldfield events in support of our libraries), and be in with a chance of seeing your short story printed in the Sutton Coldfield Observer, on FOLIO Sutton Coldfield’s website and social media, and available to read in Sutton Coldfield Library. The winner will also receive £25 in book tokens.

Submissions close Midnight 14 February 2020.

The winner will be announced at our Local Authors’ Book Festival in Sutton Coldfield Library on 14 March 2020 (https://www.facebook.com/events/741521339682030/).

Terms and Conditions:

Entrants must be 18 years or over.

Entry is open to everyone, nationally and internationally.


Entries must be in the entrant’s own name/names, not pseudonymous. If successful, you can request that we use your nom de plume.


Entries must not have been previously published in print or online, been broadcast or won a prize.


Entries can be on any theme or subject as long as they are (1) original, (2) written in English, (3) the content somehow links to Sutton Coldfield and (4) not pornographic, harmful or objectionable. Entries must aimed at adult readers. Non-fiction and fiction written for children under 14 years is not eligible.


Authors retain full worldwide copyright throughout.


Maximum length is 250 words, title excluded.
 Please note your word count (we will ask for this information when you submit your entry).

Entries will be made via this online form at the same time as paying your entry fee. Please note, no special formatting is possible due to technical issues submitting the story via this process. You will need to copy and paste your short story into the booking form as part of the entry process.

Entries will be read and judged anonymously.

If the piece has no title, then its first three words must be used as the title.


To enter pay your entry fee and submit your story via this form. If you are unable to enter online please call 07483 410155 to arrange an alternative method of entry, including payment of entry fee.


No corrections or alterations can be made after entries have been received.


Entry is open until Midnight on February 14 2020.

The fee is £5 per submission. The entry fee will be reimbursed to writers facing financial difficulties.

There is no limit to the number of entries any single entrant may make but each entry carries a £5 fee.

No refunds are possible.


The prizes for the competition are as published, non-negotiable and non-transferable.

The results of the competition will be announced at the Local Authors’ Book Festival in Sutton Coldfield Library on March 14 2020.

Entry constitutes acceptance of all FOLIO Flash Fiction competition rules, terms and conditions and policies. Entries that fail to comply with rules, terms and conditions, privacy policies and requirements will be disqualified. No correspondence can be entered into. Judges’ decisions are final.

This ticket entitles you to enter one piece of writing to the FOLIO Sutton Coldfield Flash Fiction Competition. If you wish to enter multiple times, you must buy separate tickets for each entry. The entry fee will be reimbursed to writers facing financial difficulties. Please email info@foliosuttoncoldfield.org.uk if this is relevant to you. This information will be kept confidential and only seen by the competition administrator.
