Reawakening the Maison Dieu hard-hat tours
Maison Dieu (Dover Town Hall)
Tours last 1 hour.
Join us for a rare behind the scenes glimpse of building and conservation work in progress as we get this incredible 800-year-old building ready for re-opening. See work in progress on the reinstatement of the William Burges decorative scheme in the Connaught Hall and Mayor’s Parlour. View recently conserved stained-glass windows in close-up detail and find out about how this building is set to become one of Kent’s premier events and heritage venues.
Please note all visitors must wear strong flat shoes or boots, no open toes or high heels, no trainers, legs must be covered with long trousers. We will provide hard hat and hi-vis tabards. There is currently no lift access to the building, while the old one is being replaced, so all participants must be fit and well, with no heart problems or underlying medical conditions, have full mobility and be able to climb several flights of stairs to reach all levels. Age 12 plus only. All under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
There may be the opportunity to climb to the top of the bird’s nest scaffold to see conservation work in progress on the Connaught Hall ceiling. This is accessed by a temporary staircase, leading to a fully-floored ceiling deck. Anyone who doesn’t have a head for heights can remain at the bottom. A health and safety briefing will be provided on arrival.
Please arrive promptly (15 minutes before start time) as latecomers will not be able to join a party that has already started a tour.
The Maison Dieu is 10 minutes walk from both Dover Priory railway station and the Pencester Road bus stops. The nearest pay and display car parks are Maison Dieu car park, CT16 1RL and Norman Street car park, CT179RS.
