Studio Workshop | Painting, Paper, Fabric, Hand & Machine Stitch

Join me for a relaxed Sunday afternoon studio workshop at Mino Art School, inspired by the colour, pattern and the vibrant beauty of coral reefs.

We’ll take visual cues from reef environments — translucent blues and greens, flashes of coral pinks, soft neutrals and organic shapes — exploring how colour, line and texture can work together to create rhythm, depth and movement. This is an abstract, intuitive session, focused on process rather than perfection.

You’ll work across paper-based mixed media, combining layered colour with freehand machine embroidery and hand embellishment. Stitch is used in a loose, expressive way — as line, texture and interruption — rather than traditional embroidery. Threads may trail, overlap or break the surface, adding tactile interest and a sense of flow to the work.

Materials are provided and kept deliberately open-ended, including inks, watercolour, gouache, liquid dyes, oil pastel and graphite, alongside machine stitch and hand-applied details. You’ll be supported throughout with demonstrations and one-to-one guidance — as much or as little as you’d like — giving you confidence to experiment while still working towards a resolved outcome.

On the day, you can choose what you’d like to focus on:

one larger, more developed piece

a series of smaller works exploring colour and surface

or a concertina sketchbook for layered ideas and experimentation

The emphasis is on curiosity, exploration and material play, with the intention that you leave with work you feel genuinely pleased with and proud of.

The studio

Mino Art School is a cosy, working studio in the suburbs — a calm, informal space to slow down, focus and settle into making. Group sizes are kept small, allowing plenty of room, comfort and individual support.

Unlimited refreshments will be available, including hot drinks, sparkling elderflower presse 🥂and plenty of treats. You’re very welcome to bring a bottle to share if you wish.

The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed, making this workshop ideal for anyone looking to switch off and immerse themselves in the process. It’s particularly well suited to those wanting something a little more exploratory in their creative practice — whether you’re coming on your own or with a friend.
