Overview
During this course we will explore the lines, shapes, and gentle movement found in English bluebells. Using the bluebell wood beside the studio, you’ll have the opportunity to walk through the woodland and sketch en plein air (outdoors), embracing the colour and form of a semi ancient habitat. Weather permitting, we will venture outside each week to sketch or photograph different elements of the woodland, returning to the studio to develop your work and build in more detail. We will use a range of linear materials including pencil, pen, and pastel. This course is very similar to the Friday morning class but is a shorter length course. With a maximum of eight students per class, you’ll enjoy focused guidance and a warm, supportive learning environment designed to nurture both confidence and creativity. *All necessary materials and equipment will be provided by the studio, just bring your creativity! *

Disclaimer: This course has been scheduled to align with typical bluebell season based on previous years. While we hope the blooms will be at their best during the middle weeks, natural timing and weather conditions cannot be guaranteed. We will aim to visit the woodland regularly, weather permitting. For any outdoor activity, you will be asked to sign a simple waiver confirming your understanding of the safety precautions in place for working in the woodland.

Weekly Breakdown
Week 1: Drawing techniques focusing on the main shapes of a bluebell
Week 2: Mark making experimentation to build a 3D image
Week 3: Colour building and layering; breaking down the bluebell structure
Week 4: Larger scale work, developing freedom and expressive marks

Course Planning & Teaching
Our courses are thoughtfully designed and taught by Kitty, Creative Director and Founder of Springwood Barn. A fully qualified teacher with 17 years of experience, Kitty is fully insured, certified in First Aid, and holds an enhanced DBS check, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all learners.

Each project introduces students to a renowned artist and their creative influences, encouraging personal interpretation and creative growth. By drawing from both historical and contemporary sources, students build technical skill and artistic confidence, culminating in a unique and expressive final artwork.

This structured approach balances technical learning with creative autonomy, empowering students to experiment, develop their own style, and grow in their artistic practice.
