TURNING EARTH LEYTON
Join us for a Raku firing at our Leyton studio.
Raku originated in Japan in the 16th century and is known for its unique firing process. During a Raku firing, pieces are removed from the kiln while still red-hot and placed into containers filled with combustible materials such as sawdust, leaves or paper. The intense heat causes the materials to ignite, creating a reduced atmosphere that affects the glazes and clay bodies in unpredictable ways. This process results in distinctive and often dramatic surface patterns, colours and textures on the finished pieces.
For this session, you don't need to bring anything with you. When you arrive, you'll be able to choose your own bisque-fired vase from a selection of pre-made pieces.
You'll then glaze and decorate your chosen vase using our Raku glazes, ready for it to go into the kiln.
Your piece will be Raku fired while you wait, giving you the chance to see this exciting firing process in action and watch your vase transform.
Because of the unpredictable nature of Raku, every finished piece is completely unique.
Pieces will be fired up to 1000°C, so they will remain porous and are not food safe.
No previous pottery experience is not needed. All materials, your vase, glazing and firing are included in the ticket price.

Please arrive promptly for your booked session so you have plenty of time to choose and glaze your vase before firing.
Raku is a hands-on process involving glazes, smoke and an outdoor firing, so please wear practical clothes and closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting a little messy.
Your vase will be fired during the session while you wait. Please allow time for the full firing and cooling process before taking your finished piece home.
All materials and equipment are provided — you don't need to bring anything with you.
