OVERVIEW

This workshop is designed for individuals who have completed their Mountain Leader Training and wish to enhance their proficiency with smaller-scale maps (1:40,000 and 1:50,000). During the day, participants will engage in practical exercises to build confidence in the map, navigating through the landscape, we will help to refine navigation strategies. Utilising reflective practice, the course aims to bolster confidence, challenge assumptions, and align skills with the realities of map interpretation on smaller scales. 

SKILLS COVERED

Understanding Map Differences

Explore the characteristics of different map types and scales to adapt your navigation techniques effectively.

Distances and Timings

Develop skills to estimate travel distances and timings accurately on smaller scale maps. 

Colour Shadings and Height Gains

Use colour shading to quickly assess elevation changes and terrain difficulty, improving decision-making and gaining familiarity with a new map layout. 

Contour Intervals 

Understand contour intervals, explore 15m height gains and compare and contrast the information from your OS map. 

Understanding & Comparing the Scale

Gain insight into the practical implications of using 1:40,000 scale maps for navigation accuracy.

Comparing Map Scales

Compare and contrast small-scale maps with larger-scale alternatives to refine your navigation strategies. 

Symbols and Map Information

Identify key map symbols and essential information for situational awareness (understand the secondary information)

Build Solid Strategies

Develop effective navigation strategies tailored to the challenges of small-scale maps, and over larger distances using the macro features displayed on the scale. 

Map Assumptions and Realities

Reflect on your assumptions versus the realities of terrain to improve navigational judgement.

Relocation Techniques and Processes

Master relocation techniques to regain position confidently if you become disoriented.

-To be working towards or completed your ML Training
-Or to be ML assessed and looking for a refresher
-If you are a member of the MTA you will get this course for the price of £85

Kit & Equipment

-Kit list provided at booking.
-You will need to wear suitable outdoor clothing (warm and waterproof where possible) and suitable mountain footwear (boots)
-A good rucksack to carry everything you need for the day
-Lunch, snacks and water for a full day
