Discover the fascinating and turbulent history of the Maison Dieu in the 16th century and the building’s many lives from a religious house and store house to a victualling yard for the Royal Navy. The Maison Dieu’s connections to the harbour and the Crown will also be examined.
Our speaker is Kieron Hoyle, a PhD student at Canterbury Christ Church University, whose research is based on the changing role of Maison Dieu in the sixteenth century. Kieron is a recipient of the Ian Coulson award. A former history teacher at the boy’s grammar school in Dover, she’s always been fascinated by the history of this important town as a gateway to Europe as well as the first line of defence.
