Improving Spelling: Helping all children to spell well

Overview
This event will give you all the knowledge and confidence you need to teach children to spell well, whatever their starting point. Spelling is much more than a basic skill; poor spellers will limit the language they use when writing, affecting composition and creativity.

The day includes:

• time to analyse writing to understand the variety of spelling issues children can experience;
• a close look at the processes and practice of early spellers;
• a session on the role of phonics in learning to spell in KS2;
• a discussion on the range of approaches spellers take to remember tricky words and how spelling lessons should be adapted to accommodate this;
• what a spelling lesson should look like.
