A virtual class is ideal for dogs with leash reactivity, as in-person classes can worsen the situation due to the close proximity of other dogs, leading to increased stress for both you and your pet.
If walks have become difficult, embarrassing, or even scary, your dog may be experiencing "leash reactivity." This behavior can feel overwhelming, frustrating, and isolating.
In this class, you'll learn how to handle your leash-reactive dog more effectively and recognize the signs of reactivity before it escalates.
Class Minimum: We require at least 3 dogs enrolled in order to run this class. If fewer than 3 sign up, the start date may be postponed by a few weeks.
Here are some things to do before class:
Give your dog a potty break
Have a “pacifier” (chewy, bullystick, rawhide, stuffed Kong, etc.) nearby. You can give it to your pup while I demo or lecture to prevent antsiness
Make sure you have a TON of treats handy! We want you to have a hierarchy of treats (a trail mix of sorts). Low value treats are typically kibble or kibble-like. Medium value treats might be something like packaged jerkies. High value treats are used the most in fearful/reactive dog training: think CHEESE, DELI MEAT, FISH PASTE, etc. Soft & smelly!
Make sure your dog is a tiny bit hungry (a.k.a. motivated) before class: skip dinner or give them half of their usual amount
Gear that we recommend for your dog in and outside of class includes:
Harness (if you are currently walking your dog on a collar only, please purchase a harness, front or back- clip, or both)
Wide (2”+) martingale collar if your dog is sensitive to handling/harnessing
Regular fabric, biothane or leather leash, fixed length ~6’+ (no retractable leashes)
Hands-free TREAT POUCH (bait bag, fanny pack, etc.) Eventually you will be taking your training on-the-road, let’s prepare for that now!
We ask that you do not use:
We care deeply for the welfare of your dogs and want training to be as fun and stress-free as possible for both canines and humans!
To coach you during practice times, I need to be able to see your dog while you train. It's too much to hold a phone or tablet yourself and have your hands free for training. Use a laptop so you can adjust the screen angle toward your dog, or have an adjustable tripod/stabilizer to point the camera at your dog
Click on the link above. Zoom will ask you to test speakers and audio, follow the prompts
I will ask everyone to RENAME themselves with their DOG'S NAME first and then human first name(s) and pronouns (e.g. “Z.Z. & Holden (she/hers)”)
After class:
You will receive a weekly homework assignment, handouts and supplemental educational videos
Classes are recorded (names will not be visible in the recording)
Like an in-person class you must attend "live" to get the greatest benefit, however we will provide the class recording for up to 2 missed classes upon request. Recordings are available for one week after the class and we kindly ask that you do not share them outside of your dog’s household
