This linocut basics weekend workshop is suitable for beginners and for those who want to hone their basic skills ready to take their work to the next level.

Working at a small scale we will work through a series of simple exercises to build a good foundation
of knowledge to further progress your lino printing.

We will begin by learning how to prepare lino, becoming familiar with various tools and the types of marks one can create for different visual effects, inking the lino and how to set and adjust the press.
We will also explore the different ways that positive and negative shapes, and mark-making, can be used in relief printing for graphic effect and to create a sense of form, space and texture.

We will then progress to creating a simple one-colour image of individual design. Learn ways to add colour to this single image with chine collé and rainbow roll effects.

Finally, explore ways that a one-colour image can become part of a multi-block image, how to set up a simple registration guide and print and present an edition of your work, including how you can do all of this without a press, at home.

Instruksjoner

Students need to bring:
Workbook/notebook
Apron
General stationery items (pencils, eraser, etc)

Optional:
Own lino/ wood cutting tools – there are some tools that can be used in the classroom or you can purchase a small set or individual tools onsite. A small to medium V-chisel and a small to medium U-chisel are good to start with.
Any other printmaking equipment related to relief printing that you already own, that may be useful including your own rollers, cutting tools...
Any special paper you may like to try printing your textures on. Thinner papers such as Hahnemuhle Sumi-E, Zerkall coloured papers and some Japanese papers are good for creating double-sided papers for artist’s books. Brown paper is fun to experiment printing on. Heavier-weight printmaking papers are good for many applications including collage, 3D structures and stand-alone artworks.
