Scream to the Sky: explore space through movement and somatic based drawing exercises using charcoal

Detaljer

Centering charcoal as an active medium, artists Jameela Gordon-King and Jade de Montserrat offer a two day catered workshop within our woodlands site in rural Stirlingshire, engaging with on-site charcoal making to create site-specific and collective work. The workshop aims to accentuate the automatic gesture and nurturing of uncensored self-expression. The weekend intends to explore space through movement and somatic based drawing exercises accompanied by deep listening, guided by Jameela and Jade. Participants will form a collaborative body, engaging with each other and the land through connectivity, with an intentionality of decolonial practice: decentralisation of western ways of mark making and movement; acknowledging our indigeneity to land, using charcoal that is of the land. Site specificity through a land offering ceremony and experimental sound as a somatic stimulant is offered.

People from all generations who are interested in the idea of an expanded view of drawing and knowledge, a festival of ideas, are encouraged to attend. Some prior understanding of such practices is required.

Dr. Jade de Montserrat’s practice is concerned with structures of care and social change. Their work explores the intersections of gender, race, class, and colonialism. Jade has exhibited across the UK and is represented by Bosse & Baum Gallery, London. de Montserrat is a Tutor at Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford, Lecturer in Painting at Slade, University College London, and an Associate Lecturer at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London.

Jameela Stenheden Gordon-King is a London based painter, having graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2022 she has now completed an MA at the Slade School of Fine Art. Recent exhibitions include group shows in London, Glasgow and Athens. Her work is a conversation between the body, movement and materiality. Working across a large scale in painting and drawing, alongside sound production to bring to her works a visual frequency that exists beyond the auditory. Capturing motion in mark.
