OVERVIEW

This course is for mountain walkers ready to progress onto grade I scrambles. You’ll learn essential skills to move safely over steep, rocky, and exposed terrain—building confidence on loose ground, rocky steps, and scree.

There’s a strong focus on developing good mountain movement and a deeper understanding of efficient and safe walking in complex terrain. This unroped course is a practical introduction to scrambling, helping you tackle more adventurous lines to the summit with confidence.

COURSE OUTLINE

###Gear and Preparation:
We’ll start with a look at essential scrambling gear; focusing on footwear choice, helmets, and useful extras like gloves and emergency kit. You’ll also learn how to make the most of guidebooks, route descriptions, and digital tools to plan and prepare for your day.

Movement Skills and Technique:

A strong foundation in good movement is key to safe scrambling. We’ll work on footwork, balance, and body positioning - learning how to move fluidly and securely across rock. Handholds, three points of contact, and efficient movement will be practiced throughout.

Understanding the Terrain:

Scrambling is about making good decisions in dynamic terrain. Scrambling often means leaving the path and trusting your own judgment. We’ll focus on developing ‘follow your nose’ skills—learning how to read the rock in front of you and choose a line that’s safe and enjoyable. You’ll build the confidence to adapt on the move, respond to changing ground, and make smart decisions in real time

Building Confidence on Steep Ground:

As the course progresses, we’ll introduce a variety of scrambling situations to challenge and build your confidence - moving over slabs, negotiating short rocky steps, and handling simple down climbs. All activities are tailored to your ability, with plenty of support and coaching.

Safety and Decision Making:

We’ll explore how to plan a safe scrambling day from start to finish, including route choice, weather considerations, group dynamics, and basic emergency procedures. You’ll also learn how to stay on route, when to retreat, and what to do if things go wrong - including how to call for help if needed.
