Motorheads (Mechanics) 11-16

This is all about understanding how engines work and then interacting with them to maintain and if necessary repair them.

We cover much car mechanics and maintenance using our 'buggy'. We make use of a range of motors and engines from motorcycles, lawnmowers and model aircraft.

You will learn:

• to be organised! Work methodically, carefully and safely.
• how an internal combustion engine works
• to tune and adjust fuel/air ratios
• diagnose and solve problems
• to recognise identify and describe key components
• to operate motors safely according to your age and ability.
• perform risk assessments for all activities and controlling risks to an acceptable level or not proceeding until safe.

Our buggy is basically a mini metro without a body in a space frame. We follow protocols with respect to COSHH eg flammables HT electricity and moving parts.

We have various engines to disassemble and reassemble using workshop tools and some of these will be expected to work afterwards!

The course will progress to other systems on a common vehicle such as clutch, brakes, steering.
Opportunity to 'operate' motors/engines in controlled conditions will be available subject to parental consent, track record of responsibility /competence on the course and physique.

This is a rare provision and numbers are strictly limited to 4.

PPE glasses/ nitrile gloves will be provided.
