Open sailing session for Scouts and Explorers at The Den.
Due to ongoing restrictions around COVID-19 and maintaining social distancing sessions are limited to a maximum of 11 youth participants, and places need to be booked in advance.
All dinghy helms need to have completed the RYA Stage 2 Sailing Course (or be of equivalent experience). This is to ensure you are reasonably competent in a boat, to minimise the amount of close proximity contact you may require from the leader team.
Due to the rules on distancing, those from different households will not be able to sail in the same boat. We will therefore mostly be offering individual places on our single-handed boats; the Topaz’s.
Those from the same household will however be asked to sail together in either a Quest or Topaz, to maximise the amount of boats we have available for all. Unfortunately we're not currently able to accommodate non-family members sailing together.
Please only sign up your own children, as all participants and their parents/carers need to understand the restrictions we have in place to keep activities safe both for COVID-19 and building work in progress at The Den. Due to limitations on numbers we regret the family members and friends won't be allowed into The Den site for now.
If after booking you are unable to attend, please cancel the booking or contact boating@3rdcb.org.uk so we can ensure the limited places are offered to other members.
Please read the following points in full to ensure your child has a fun and safe experience. There are a number of changes to how we normally operate, but we still aim to have great fun on the water.
Bring your own water bottle, drinks & snacks (there won't be any available in The Den)
Participants will be asked and encourage to distance as much as possible. Please ensure your young people are reminded of this before attending The Den for activities.
The Den side of the site is currently a building site as we re-develop the building’s ground floor, with no changing rooms, or internal toilets or showers. Access to the main hall will be very limited. An outside changing area will be provided in the yard, but please note there will not be any secure storage. Please avoid bringing valuables to The Den, although leaders will be able to lock essential items in the building whilst we’re on the water.
A hose is available for ‘showering’ and there are two porta-toilets available for use.
Leaders and helpers will be maintaining distancing where possible, and wearing face masks where close contact cannot be avoided. Participants will need to be relatively competent in rigging, launching, sailing and recovering their own dinghy to significantly reduced the requirement for leader assistance.
Participants will be asked not to purposefully capsize or swim from their boats, and the safety boats crews will be briefed on techniques for managing incidents afloat, while maintain distancing.
Please remember that if you have any COVID-19 symptoms (including a temperature higher than 38c, a new continuous cough, or a loss or change in sense of smell or taste), or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 symptoms within the last two weeks, please stay at home as a precaution and help slow the spread of the disease.
The Group has produced a COVID boating specific risk assessment which has been approved by the District Commissioner to help us manage and reduce the risks presented in the current climate. A copy of this risk assessment, outlining how we aim to keep leaders / helpers and participants safe, is available on request.
