Tracking for Beginners

Welcome to the tracking course at Cognitive Canine Co, where we combine fun, teamwork and reward-based methods to fulfil your dogs natural tracking instincts.

Why tracking?

Tracking gives your dog a job to do. It stimulates their mind, taps into those natural instincts, builds confidence and helps you and your dog work as a team.

Whether your dog is a young enthusiastic learner, a teen that needs direction or a dog that just needs a new challenge, tracking could be the perfect fit!

What we cover :

• Characteristics of scent and how a dog sees the track
• Foundational skills e.g. alerting, focus, movement, direction following the track
• Building confidence in a tracking dog
• Short tracks: simple trails in familiar terrain to build success and motivation.
• Intermediate tracks : increasing the length, distractions, different surfaces and conditions
• Teamwork & handler skills : Reading your dogs behaviour, line handling skills and track laying skills

What you will need:

1. Flat lead (5-10m longline which can be purchased from us)
2. Harness (comfortable and

4. Your dogs favourite toy &/or treats (high value)
5. Water
6. Outdoor clothing (we'll be outside whatever the weather) and suitable footwear
7. Plenty of enthusiasm

What makes tracking different from scentwork?

Scentwork searches for a specific target odour in a small area, tracking follows human scent across terrain. Its about the journey, not a single find.
