Iona Niven
Forest School Leader

I first trained as a Forest School teacher at the beginning of my teaching career. I have over 10 years of experience teaching in Early Years and Primary schools across the UK and abroad, where I have also set up and led Forest Schools. I met Suzanne at Forest Adventurers a few years ago and developed an after-school club based in Prudhoe which the children and I looked forward to each week.

After a year on maternity leave, I am now focusing solely on Forest School teaching and can’t wait to get back into the woods.

I love giving children creative and exciting learning opportunities using the outdoors. I have seen the benefits to teaching children outside, giving them the freedom and the chance to grow in confidence, gain skills such as making fires, climbing trees, using knives for whittling, wood carving and building friendships. I enjoy seeing the children explore nature and love to facilitate their interests.

Wherever I can I like to incorporate music and singing into my sessions especially whilst sitting around the campfire cooking a marshmallow. I model to the children how to use tools such as fire starters, wood peelers and whittling knives in a safe and secure way. Arts and crafts are always available with the encouragement of the use of natural resources.

I can’t wait to see you at my sessions and promise they will be lots of fun!

I’m a Level 3 qualified Forest School practitioner with an enhanced DBS check and hold Outdoor and Paediatric First Aid training.
