Books and Bridles: The Story of the Horse Back Librarians Description: The Roosevelt era’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) is known for its many huge infrastructure projects and improvements. But it also consisted of a little-known program called the Packhorse Librarians. This presentation tells the story of the Packhorse Librarians, a relatively small group of women, whose mission was to deliver and distribute reading materials to the far-off corners of Appalachia during the darkest hours of the Great Depression. Interactive discussion topics include: Who were the horseback librarians? Why did they do what they did? How did they do what they did? What role did Eleanor Roosevelt play in their creation? Whatever happened to them?
