A Repair Café is a free, community event where people can bring broken or damaged items—such as small appliances, electronics, clothing, bikes, and more—to be fixed with the help of skilled volunteers. The goal is to reduce waste, extend the life of everyday objects, and foster a culture of repair over replacement. Participants not only get their items fixed but also learn valuable repair skills in a collaborative, friendly environment. It's a way to promote sustainability, share knowledge, and strengthen community connections by helping one another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Putnam Valley Library Repair Café held? It's held in the Community Room at the Putnam Valley Library, 30 Oscawana Lake Rd., NY. 10579.
Repair times vary. The 30 minute timeslot is an average to minimize waiting, though it is sometimes necessary. Hey, did you know that we provide free refreshments and great conversations while you wait?
Are repairs really free?
Yes! If a replacement part is necessary (and available) you'll be asked to pay our cost. Payments or "tips" are not accepted, but if you wish, you may make a donation to subsidize Putnam Valley Library's Repair Café expenses.
Why are you doing this for free?
Our talented and generous Repair Coaches enjoy sharing their time and skills while helping others learn how to maintain and repair their stuff. Although Putnam Valley Library incurs costs to hold these events, we know that repairing and caring for our stuff, builds community by providing a needed service in a fun, sociable café atmosphere, keeps waste out of landfills and incinerators, reduces our carbon footprint and other pollution
Can I volunteer to help in some way?
Absolutely! We always need more help at our Welcome table, providing and serving refreshments, photographing, set up, break down, and more.
Who do I contact if I have another question?
Email Repair@putnamvalleylibrary.org. We'll respond by email or phone if you provide your number.
